How to truly listen: lessons from a deaf musician

posted in: Blog | 0

Evelyn Glennie, world-class percussionist, speaks to us about listening with our whole bodies – through our hands, skulls, feet, and experiencing the resonance of every sound. When you truly listen you pick up the nuances and colour of the sound produced – this also goes to what is being said.  An interesting point is that Evelyn says it is important to let go – for example, if you grip the stick too tightly, your hand experiences a lot of shock as it hits the drum, and your forearm gets detached from the experience and the feel of the sound. So it is important to be relaxed, let go and allow the body space and presence to experience what is being communicated.
